Provide citizens and visitors with exceptional library services that facilitate personal growth, economic development, and quality of life in a manner that strengthens community pride while fostering a countywide identity and partnerships.

Service descriptions

Surfcat:

SurfCat is the computerized catalog which shows library users where materials are located throughout the system. Terminals are located at every branch. Web access to SurfCat is available from the Library Home Page.

Reference materials and assistance:

The six Regional Branches in the Volusia County Library System have in-depth reference collections. The Community Branches have basic reference collections. The Daytona Beach Regional Library on City Island has the most comprehensive business collection as well as a collection of selected state and federal documents.

Special collections:

Special collections throughout the library system include the Genealogy/Local History collections at the DeLand and Daytona Libraries. A collection of materials on environmental studies is available at the Deltona Regional Library.

Audiovisual/Computer services:

The Audiovisual/Computer services throughout the library system provide both instructional and entertainment DVDs, music on compact discs and audio books.

Public access computers are available at all branches.  Free WiFi access is available at all branches.

Program services:

Throughout the year many branches provide programs for all ages.   Programs include story times, book discussions, educational sessions and more.   The calendar of events is available online.  Visit your branch regularly for announcements and the Happenings newsletter.

Public use meeting rooms:

Meeting rooms in the Volusia County Public Library system are available to the public with certain restrictions.   Click here for the meeting room policy and application.  Applications may be filled out on-line but must be presented in person at the branch.  Rooms vary in size and hospitality features.   Check with your local branch for room availability.   See fees section for costs.

Friends of the library groups:

Library Friends provide invaluable volunteer support, community interactions and legislative support.   Friends' groups charge nominal dues and hold meetings for members.   To join a Friends of the Library group or volunteer, visit a branch near you.

Borrowing materials

Limits on loans:

Library patrons may have 1 HotSpot and 1 Launchpad checked out on their library card at any one time. There is an overall 100 item per card limit.

Returns:

All materials borrowed may be returned to any Volusia County Public Library facility. Outside bookdrops are provided for your convenience.

Circulation information:

  • Books: 21 days
  • Audio books: 21 days
  • HotSpots:  21 days
  • Express books: 14 days
  • Launchpads: 14 days
  • Music CDs: 7 days
  • Entertainment DVDs: 7 days
  • Instructional DVDs: 7 days
  • Children's DVDs:  7 days
  • Magazines: 7 days

Reservations:

You may place reservations for circulating materials owned by the Library on a SurfCat terminal or from the Web by accessing SurfCat from your home computer.

Renewals:

Most materials may be renewed with the exception of reserved materials. Materials can be renewed at a self-check kiosk at some locations. Materials can be brought to the library circulation service desk along with your library card to be renewed. Materials can be renewed from the Web by accessing SurfCat from your home computer.  Most items may be renewed up to five (5) times, unless reserved for another patron. A Launchpad may be renewed one (1) time, unless it is reserved for another patron. There are no renewals on HotSpots.

Reservations and interlibrary loans:

Each branch serves as an access point to the system's entire collection. If your branch does not have the materials you need, visit the branch owning the materials or request it by placing a hold on the item. All available materials except for reference may be sent to other branches. You will be notified when the materials you requested have arrived at your branch.

If the Volusia County Public Library does not own the material desired, it may be borrowed from another Florida library system through an interlibrary loan (ILL). The Library is a member of FLIN SHAREit, click here for access.

  • A Volusia County Public Library card number and PIN are required to make a request.
  • The library card must be in good standing.
  • Any item that has been published within the past year cannot be requested.
  • A maximum of five (5) ILL requests may be active at one time.
  • The loan period for ILLs is three (3) weeks.
  • ILL materials are not renewable.
  • The borrower is solely responsible for the cost of a lost or damaged item.  The transaction of funds is between the owning library and the borrower.

You should allow 2-6 weeks before expecting the item to arrive.

Curbside pickup:

  • Place your holds online or over the phone
  • Branch staff will notify you when your items are available for pickup
  • Call when you arrive for curbside pickup

Library cards

...are free to Volusia county residents. Visit or call your nearest branch for information on how to get a library card.

...can be obtained for children with a signature on the application from the parent or guardian. (Parent or guardian must show proof of residency.)   Volusia County Public Library adheres to the laws of the State of Florida in all aspects of confidentiality of records. Circulation information for minors will be provided to the parent pursuant to Florida Statute 257.261.

...are valid at all branches of the Volusia County Public Library.   Protect your card. Cardholders are responsible for all materials checked out on their library card.   Address and phone number changes must be reported immediately by coming to the library with proof of new address. Report all lost or stolen cards immediately.  All cards must be renewed every three years.

...are issued to organizations (nursing homes, etc.) in the name of the organization free for one year. Please contact your local branch for special arrangements.

...are free to residents of Brevard, Flagler, Lake and Putnam Counties. Visit or call the nearest branch for information on how to get a library card. Residents of Brevard, Flagler and Lake counties must present a library card from their home county when applying. Reciprocal library cards are renewed on an annual basis.

...may be renewed online (if your account has already expired), by phone, or in-person. More information may be found on our get a library card page.

Fees

Fees:

  • Non-resident fee: $50.00/year or $30.00/6 months.
  • Daily visitor pass for public access computer usage: $5.00/day. For access to government information, please see the government documents page.
  • Material recovery fee:  $10.00
  • PC printing: $.15 a page B&W or $.25 a page color
  • Flash/memory sticks: $5.00
  • Photocopier:  $.15 a page B&W or $.25 a page color
  • Fax service:  $1.75 for the first page, $1.00 for each additional page. $10.75 for 18 pages.  Available only at the Daytona Beach, DeLand, Deltona, New Smyrna Beach, Ormond Beach, and Port Orange Regional Libraries.
  • Meeting room - conference: $20.00 For-profit organizations
  • Meeting room - medium: $40.00 For-profit organizations
  • Meeting room - large: $60.00 For-profit organizations

There is no charge for non-profit organizations.
There is a charge of $120.00 for use when the library is closed (available only at some branches).

Volusia Reads Online Book Club

Volusia County Public Library has partnered with PBC Guru and Freading to create a virtual book club for patrons and the community.

The book for March - May is When The Moon Is Low by Nadia Hashmimi.
