Who the Dickens Reads?

We are reading "Hills Like White Elephants," a short story by Ernest Hemingway. This short story is a great example of Hemingway's Iceberg Theory style of writing; Hemingway wrote sparingly and let the reader develop his own ideas about the characters. Join us for a discussion of this classic.

Hearing Loss 101 for Older Adults

at Daytona Beach Library on City Island

With an increase in choices, options, and price ranges for hearing loss equipment, how are you to know what to do to hear better?

Sheila Adams is a retired teacher and late-defeaned adult with 20 years experience as a hearing aid user before getting her first cochlear implant in 2000. Sheila now heads the Volusia chapter of the Hearing Loss Association of America.

Join her as she discusses all aspects of hearing loss, including the initial hearing loss evaluation, choosing an audiologist or hearing aid specialist, and purchasing a hearing aid or accessory either as an upgrade or for the first time.

The program will include CART service.

Book Talk

Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at 4 pm
at the Daytona Beach Library on City Island

Many deem author Alice Munro as the world’s greatest living short story writer. Munro has published twelve collections of acclaimed short stories and was last year’s recipient of the Nobel Prize.

Award-winning playwright Ann Magaha will examine Munro’s “Hateship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage: Stories” and will discuss two of the author’s short stories from this collection: “Family Furnishings” and “The Bear Came over the Mountain.”

This author lecture program is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the Friends of the Daytona Beach Library.

Millennium Musicians, an after-school music group, will present “Aladdin Jr.”

The drama production will feature local elementary, middle and high school students portraying characters made popular by the animated film released by Walt Disney Pictures in 1992.

Juvenile Justice: Is There a Better Way

at the Daytona Beach Library on City Island

Retired Judge Hubert L. Grimes now Director of Bethune –Cookman University’s Center for Law and Social Justice and Dr. Michael Humphreys, Associate Professor of Ethics at the University will present a program on restorative justice and how it can be applied as an alternative to school suspensions or incarceration for young African-American men.

The presenters will provide an understanding of what restorative justice is and how it functions based upon the work of South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Nelson Mandela’s response to crimes committed during the Apartheid years prior to his election.

By watching and discussing short video segments of the commission's proceedings, the richness and effectiveness of this important approach to doing justice will be revealed.

This program is part of the library’s Connecting with the Community Series, a two-year program funded in part by a Partnership Grant from the Florida Humanities Council.

Clarinet and Piano Concert

Join Bethune-Cookman University faculty members Rose Shlyam Grace and Jason M. Hastings for a concert of American and German classical music for clarinet and piano.

Dr. Rose Grace, a Russian-born pianist, has an extensive career as a soloist and chamber music recitalist. She is an Associate Professor of Music at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach and is an Adjunct Professor of Piano at Daytona State College.

Jason Hastings is a Visiting Instructor of Music with Bethune-Cookman and has spent the majority of his professional career as a performer and educator in the country of Mexico. During his tenure in Mexico, Jason has held the position of Principal Clarinet with La Orquesta Sinfónica Sinaloa de las Artes, and as Professor of Clarinet at La Escuela de Artes José Limón.
