Author Brandon Haught discusses "Going Ape"

Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at 5 pm at the DeLand Library

“For nearly a century, Florida has been a key battleground for the teaching of evolution in public schools. Before he successfully prosecuted Tennessee teacher John Scopes in the infamous Scopes Monkey Trial, William Jennings Bryan was a prominent anti-evolution agitator in Florida. More than ninety years later, tensions still run high on both sides of the issue, erupting regularly and sometimes spectacularly…

Brandon Haught is a former Marine Corps combat correspondent and a founding board member and volunteer communications director for Florida Citizens for Science.” (from University Press of Florida)

Title to be discussed: Defending Jacob by William Landay

“Andy Barber has been an assistant district attorney for two decades. He is respected. Admired in the courtroom. Happy at home with the loves of his life, his wife, Laurie, and teenage son, Jacob. Then Andy’s quiet suburb is stunned by a shocking crime: a young boy stabbed to death in a leafy park. And an even greater shock: The accused is Andy’s own son—shy, awkward, mysterious Jacob. Andy believes in Jacob’s innocence. Any parent would. But the pressure mounts. ..It is the ultimate test for any parent: How far would you go to protect your child? It is a test of devotion. A test of how well a parent can know a child. For Andy Barber, a man with an iron will and a dark secret, it is a test of guilt and innocence in the deepest sense…How far would you go?” (Amazon.com)

The Guardian ad Litem Program (GAL) and the Volusia County Public Library are offering a series of panel discussions and open houses for members of the community to learn more about volunteer opportunities that aid children at risk. “Volunteering is not a one size fits all proposition,” says Judy Evers, volunteer recruiter for the Guardian ad Litem program. “We want to give the public a menu of opportunities, from reading to children to becoming a court-appointed special advocate.”

Representatives from local organizations will briefly introduce their volunteer opportunities in a panel format. Following the presentations, attendees will be able to visit with representatives and learn about specific volunteer/mentoring opportunities. Refreshments will be served.
